Every once in a while, I find apps that are so simple and cover the most menial of tasks that I wonder why they exist. Dinner-bill-splitting apps fall into that category–for the most part, anyway.
Most bill splitters have extremely limited functionality and aren’t even worth downloading for the price of free. After all, most of those apps could be replaced by a basic calculator and you’d arrive at your calculations in half the time.
But now I’ve finally found a bill splitter app that holds its weight in worth, offering more features than the default Calculator found on most Android devices. It really can do more than equalized division amongst all eaters–I promise!
The app is called Advanced Bill Splitter and best of all, it’s free! Keep reading to see what it’s all about and how easy it is to use.
To begin using Advanced Bill Splitter, you’ll need to enter the different people that are partaking in the meal. I’m not sure if there is a cap to how many people you can track, but I doubt it. I didn’t see any mention of a limit.
Once you’ve entered the people involved, you’ll need to insert the different dishes that were ordered. These items will be used to assign to different people in order to determine how much each person should pay. Very easy and intuitive.
When you’re done with the people and items, you’ll have to set what sort of tip and tax are involved with your meal. You’ll set a tax rate (because it’s different depending on where you live), and then you’ll set a tip rate, which can be calculated either pre- or post-tax. Now that’s a pretty cool setting, in my opinion.
Lastly, you’ll need to tell Advanced Bill Splitter whether you want to split the bill equally or not. Quite straightforward here.
Like I mentioned before, the very last step is to assign which people ordered which items. The process is super easy and intuitive. Just point and tap and you’re ready to go.
I think that pretty much covers every consideration you’ll need when determining the proper bill splitting amounts. On the main screen of the app, though, there’s one more option that you can fiddle with: the type of currency you want to use.
I’m not exactly sure if that has any non-aesthetic impact, since numbers are numbers regardless of what label you put on it. Still, if you care about that sort of thing, then you’ll be happy with this option.
And here we are with the splitting all done. Notice that when I assigned the different items, the Western Omelette was shared between 2 people (in this case, “Me” and “Friend #1”). That’s right: you can even share items between multiple people. It’s that flexible!
Some of you might think that this too much work, and in some cases, it is. If you’re just going to take the total bill and split it evenly, you might as well use a basic calculator. But if you have a number of people that are all sharing different dishes and each one wants to pay only for what he or she ordered, this is the perfect app.
There are still one or two features that need to be implemented in order to cover every single possible hiccup that could occur while out eating, but I’m not sure that’s going to happen–at least in the free version, anyway.
This app does come in a paid version for $0.99. If you really want the extra features, get it on Google Play. It’s called Advanced Bill Splitter Pro.
